EVE Online: Amarr Command Ship by fuzzymodem EVE Online: Amarr Command Ship by fuzzymodem
Amarr Command Ship
Battlecruiser. 350m.

360 fly-around animation ->
[link]
(Bigger version of my Avatar)

I've tried to duplicate Amarr design aesthetic while introducing some original elements. I know most Amarrian ships are symmetrical, but there are some notable exceptions such as the Aeon and Crucifier, so I decided to take a chance in the hope of creating something more interesting.

Comments welcome :)

This should be in the game. This looks more like a COMMAND ship should than any BC currently. It's unique shape stands out on the battlefield, something for any ally to look to for inspiration or a morale boost. Command ships really should be a hull all their own, not just reskinned lower tier hulls. I did see this back when the comp was on, and at first I didn't take much notice of it. But now, having looked again at the command ships and having a closer look at this one, I think it would fit the role perfectly.
Fantastic work, Fuzzy.

Absolutely love it. Especially the aft shot. I think my corp would make fun of me for flying it but i deffinantly would. They'd have to introduce a Tech 1 variant first i think

Very nice design, I sure wouldn't mind adding it to my fleet of ships in game.

If I was to make one slight critisism, I would say that it looks more like it could fit as a protoss design rather than an Amarr one - it looks a bit like the Protoss Stargate.

Either way it doesn't detract from what would be an excellent contender for the contest, and certainly fits EVE more than most of the finalists.

Lol! Yeah. StarCraft is my favorite game, so it make sense some influence would sneak in there.

Another mistake I made was that armor segments are a separate, raised object in my design. In EVE they are part of the same object, and differentiated by texture. Had I used this approach instead, it might look more EVEish.

Actually I assumed that the raised segments were intentional, much like the armor on the Auguor and parts of the Arbitrator.

All and all protoss and Amarr design are very similar. :)

Well, this isn't exactly my area of expertise and your image is pretty darn solid from my perspective. The only thing I can think of to suggest is perhaps having a tad more contrast in your shading. If I look at space photos there is a pretty distinct line between where the light is hitting and where it is in shadow. The nice part about the way you've applied the lighting is that all the detail is visible, but realistically, the directional lighting might be a tad more dramatic.

This is an amazing concept piece though and over all extremely polished and impressive to look at. :)

you friend with those crackjudges?

in my book its a great design, walkes the thin line of capturing eve`s style and still bringing a new, radical concept. very nicely done!

I changed my sig obviously. A link to the large version of the fly-around is still at the top in the text of the entry. It's also in my scrapbook.

@ krickettt: Love your avatar btw.

Nothing bigger than the link in my sig I'm afraid. That's the size I rendered it. I might render a fly-by at larger resolution though, if enough people want to see it.

Thanks :) I'm nervously awaiting the announcement of the top 15. :fingerscrossed:

I think I have a chance, but if popularity is a good litmus test, I'm more than a bit behind. I'm pretty sure there are more than 15 more popular eligible entries no matter what time period you search within.

Also, I'm a bit concerned, because my ship doesn't come up when you browse with the new slide show function for some odd reason, but hopefully it will still get noticed.

Thanks for all your support. My guess is we'll know by tomorrow who moves forward. There are so many good designs, I don't envy the DA staff the task of eliminating all but 15.

Thanks for popping in novafox :)

I actually toned down a truer "gold" metallic to a less lustrous beige in all areas except the nose of the ship. I probably took it too far, or could have painted in flares or specular highlights for emphasis in some areas to compensate, which would have given me tighter control of the composition but, yeah, the intention was to pull the eye to the nose of the ship.

There is, in fact, an unseen light source. The three suns you see in the background were an afterthought, and while I painted in a few highlights to correspond with high specularity angles, the original primary light source is well above frame. My planet lighting is off too. They should be still be waning, but less so. However when I swung the lighting around, I lost the wisp of red nebular dust, so I made a tough call.

I also considered creating additional orthographics with the wings removed, because whoever might put it in the game would otherwise have to improvise in some areas they can't see, (hey CCP, if your listening, as far as I'm concerned you can re-envision the whole design. You know your universe better than I do) but I had my heart set on using the orthos as a border, and the clutter would have killed it, so again, tough call. Hopefully it won't hurt my chances.

Looking now, I agree with you that 350m is a bit too large when judged by window size. This impression is enhanced by so many two-story windows.

Thanks again for the thoughtful review. :peace:

Most excellent render, you didnt even break rule number 1 of amarr deisgns the waveform shape (gallente have this amarr only have arcs).

Lighting is on spot the ship does well to inherit from its surroundings. Though it may be asking a bit to much for a bit of luster of polished metal panels seems a bit weak, alot of amarrian ships such as thier gold and silver platings and they 're quite promientent in the overal surface of the vessels. Also the most foward of the bridge seems to be taking in too much light from an unknown source that the rest of the ship isnt sharing, im not sure if this artistic intention to emphasize the bridge area or not.

Composition of ship is strong enough that nobody is going to mistake it for anything else as well as the composition in the scene demands the ship to be looked from front to back first before moving onto the planets secondary star then background.

Perfect true perspective from my view then agian I myself constantly fail at that fact and probably be a poor judge of it.
I love how you used the bold lines to emphasize the general shaping of the ship while using lighter lines to further the detail without comprising or making the ship overly busy or cluttered.

This ship is indeed looks rather sound as all amarrian ships should and only other thing i can add is possibly breaking up the side views into one with the pylons and one without them.

Size of the ship seems albit too small for 350m however the drake has similar misforgivings. It is however in the proper class field.

Yeah, I made the background too. It was mostly just careful manipulation of flaming pear filters though. Lunar Cell is the coolest :headbang:

-Hey though, neat trick: The planet's ring is just a noise filter, a radial zoom, two circle selections and a scale, applied as a screen. Easy! :highfive:
